6 COMMON SIGNS OF MOISTURE IN BASEMENTS
Moisture can be a disheartening surprise to homeowners, no matter the source. It doesn't take an expert eye to spot the obvious water pooling on the ground, however, identifying and diagnosing moisture penetration is essential for proper repair. There are specific signs associated with different sources of moisture that need to be assessed in order to discover the cause and begin necessary remediation for proper basement waterproofing.
Water Leaks
Water across the floor. Leaks often start as unnoticed puddles at wall/floor junctions or other vulnerable points such as cracks and unsealed penetrations in walls or floors.
Damp Patches
Damp Patches on wall, patches that are damp, wet or cold to touch. This is typically the result of an external waterproofing failure, but can also be the result of condensation from moisture penetration
Efflorescence
This presents as a white mineral deposit on the surface, and is a result of water passing through a masonry substrate and depositing mineral salts on the surface as the source water evaporates away.

SOURCES OF MOISTURE IN BASEMENTS

Ground Water: Hydrostatic pressure is caused by the buildup of water in the soil around your foundation. This can occur because of a heavy rainfall. It can also be caused by poor drainage around the foundation or if underground pipes or sewers have broken and are leaking water into the soil. This pressure can cause damage to foundations over time, so it is important to address it with basement waterproofing in order to protect your home from potential water damage.
Surface Water: Surface water that has not penetrated into the ground. Subsurface water can often be problematic for basement structures. Having effective surface drainage is essential to lowering the hydraulic pressure against basement structures.
Moisture Vapor: transmission is the transfer of water from one environment to another in its gaseous form. Condensation: Condensation is the result of water transitioning from a gaseous to liquid state due to changes in atmospheric humidity or temperature. Unvented dryers, washing machines, cooking appliances and household activities such as cleaning and perspiring can significantly increase moisture levels below ground if ventilation is absent or limited - furthering potential mold growth on surfaces near dew points.

We accomplish this with careful excavation and installing pipe within the trench for directing collected moisture to the outside of the basement. Installation of a vapor barrier
Proper installation of a vapor barrier lining for basement waterproofing is essential for the overall effectiveness of the system. The first step is to measure and cut the vapor barrier material to fit the walls of the basement. Then, using either staples or nails, secure the membrane around all edges of the foundation walls. After this, use a caulk gun to seal any joints where two pieces are connected and around any penetrations. Finally, check all seams with a sealing tape to ensure there are no air gaps in which water can seep through.
