So why does water leak into your basement? Hydrostatic pressure and water leaks

Water is sneaky. Basement water intrusion can come from your walls, floors or joints between them leaking into the basement due to any opening it is able to find there. Water could also pass through concrete which makes basements more prone for mold growth because of its humidity levels. When soil outside the foundation contains high hydrostatic pressure, it can cause serious problems. The porous nature of concrete allows for water to seep through and into your home's basement. “Hydrostatic pressure” is the technical name for water pressure in the soil around the foundation of your home. When water begins to accumulate, it will “push” or apply pressure against your home’s basement or crawl space.

How water enters your home | Basement Waterproofing H20
  • Hydrostatic Pressure

A major cause of basement water problems is hydrostatic pressure. This phenomenon occurs when a lot of ground water comes in contact with the earth's surface, such as after heavy rainfall or snow melt from winter storms. Hydrostatic pressure refers to soil that has an abundance of groundwater and exerts immense force on your foundation walls while attempting to enter through cracks and crevices.

  • Ineffective Drainage Around Your Foundation

Drainage is a crucial aspect of any home in Alabama. If your house has a wet basement, there's an excellent chance that the issue lies with ineffective soil and drainage systems. The water is attracted to areas of low-pressure because it follows gravity downhill; when this happens, pools around foundation are formed which lead directly into small cracks in the walls - causing leaks or even seepage.

  • Ineffective Grading

A slope of 1/4 inch per foot away from the house with back-fill to prevent settling is required for patio slabs, walks and driveways according to the EPA. If a home has an unfinished basement that slopes down toward the foundation then this can lead to major problems such as water pooling around your foundation walls or hydrostatic pressure. Sloping these surfaces by at least 1/2 inch over 10 feet will help keep any standing water on its way out!

  • Gutters

Your foundation is a critical component for the structural stability of your home. Water infiltration can lead to leaks, cracks and shifting when water pools next to your property. Regularly cleaning of gutters and downspouts will create an outlet for rainwater to flow out of the yard and into a place where it will be absorbed naturally or flow into a drainage system.

  • Interior drainage systems

Interior drainage systems are far less disruptive to install and service than conventional French drain systems by eliminating the need to dig out the entire perimeter of the basement and regrade the soil around your home. At half the cost, an interior drainage collection system or sub-floor drain may be installed underneath the basement floor along the perimeter of the basement walls. Our H2O Waterproofing System is time trusted and works every time by collecting water that enters the home by all 5 ways and then diverting it to a sump pump system or outside the home.

Signs of Leaks in Your Basement

Correctly waterproofing any space at ground level or below grade during initial construction is essential. Once soil is filled around a basement, making improvements to exterior walls becomes more time-consuming and costly. Without proper waterproofing, basement walls are susceptible to leaks, seepage and interior condensation. Too much indoor moisture can foster damp, uncomfortable conditions. Excessively moist indoor air enhances the chill of winter and the hot, muggy feel of summer, causing HVAC and dehumidifying systems to work harder and use more energy.

Eric and his team did a great job installing an incredible waterproofing system in an investment property I bought. The house was originally built in 1978 and had cinder blocks where moisture had been slowly accumulating for years. They came and installed their waterproofing system and a pump to pump out any ensuing water from rains and the system works amazingly. No more moisture and no more musty odors. They were very knowledgeable and easy to work with. Their estimate was one of the best as well.

I contacted H2O Waterproofing and spoke with the owner Eric Hamilton. He came out surveyed the problem and gave me an estimate that was better than any of his competitors. He gave me a date as to when they would start and complete the waterproofing of my basement. It took two (2) days to complete it and they did an outstanding job. I would highly recommend his company for waterproofing.
