The term "drain tile" comes from the clay tiles farmers used in the 1800s to drain waterlogged fields. Modern drain tile is perforated plastic pipe, but the principle is identical. Interior Drain Tile: How It Works

Interior drain tile is installed inside the basement, at the base of the foundation wall. The installation process starts with saw-cutting a channel along the interior perimeter of the basement floor, directly at the wall-floor joint. This joint is the most common water entry point in Alabama basements, hydrostatic pressure from the red clay soil forces water through it regardless of how tight the original construction was.

The perforated pipe is set in the channel on a bed of clean aggregate. The channel follows the full perimeter of the basement and routes all collected water to a sump basin installed at a low point in the floor. A submersible sump pump in the basin activates automatically when water reaches a set level and discharges it away from the foundation through a pipe routed to the exterior.

After installation, new concrete is poured over the channel. The finished floor looks identical to the original. There is no visible evidence of the system, no exterior excavation, and no disruption to the yard or landscaping. Interior drain tile does not stop water from entering the wall. It intercepts water at the wall-floor joint and routes it to the sump before it spreads across the floor. Exterior Drain Tile: How It Works

Exterior drain tile is installed outside the foundation wall, at the footing level. The installation requires excavating the soil away from the foundation down to the footing,  typically 6 to 10 feet deep for a full basement. This exposes the exterior face of the foundation wall.

Once exposed, the wall is cleaned, inspected for structural cracks, and waterproofed with a membrane or coating applied directly to the concrete or block. A drainage board is often installed over the membrane to direct water downward toward the drain tile rather than along the wall face. Perforated pipe is then set at the footing level on a gravel bed, wrapped in filter fabric to prevent fine sediment infiltration, and sloped toward a discharge point or daylight outlet.

The excavated soil is backfilled around the drainage system. For best long-term performance, the backfill nearest the foundation is replaced with granular material, gravel or coarse sand, rather than the original clay soil. Exterior drain tile is the more complete intervention: it addresses the water source before it contacts the foundation wall at all.
